In the world of professional landscaping, the most important work is often the work you never see. While the stone pavers are what catch the eye, the quality of the foundation determines if that beauty lasts for three years or thirty. At Golden Maple Landscaping, we specialize in Triple-Locked Base Systems.
What is a Triple-Locked System?
A standard interlock installation often involves a layer of sand and some gravel. In the freeze-thaw cycles of Ontario, this is a recipe for shifting, sinking, and weed growth. Our system uses three distinct layers of structural integrity to "lock" the project in place.
1. The Structural Core (GAB)
We excavate deeper than the industry standard to reach undisturbed native soil. We then install 8 to 12 inches of Granular A (GAB) base, compacted in 2-inch "lifts." This creates a monolithic structural core that bridges soft spots in the soil and provides a solid platform for the pavers.
2. High-Performance Geotextiles
Between the native soil and our new base, we install a commercial-grade non-woven geotextile fabric. This prevents the "migration" of stones into the soil below, ensuring our structural base never loses its density or thickness over time. It’s like adding a high-strength skeleton to the earth itself.
3. Specialized Bedding & Jointing
Finally, we use high-stability bedding aggregates instead of traditional limestone screenings, which can hold water and lead to heaving. The final "lock" is the polymeric sand in the joints, which hardens into a flexible, water-resistant seal that prevents weeds and ants from ever taking hold.
