01 / THE FOOTPRINT

Start with the space.

Width and depth describe the structural framing footprint. Picture-framed decking uses your outer-frame overhang setting beyond the finished fascia (default 1½ in). Measure height up from grade.

Wrap around the house

Continue the deck around one or both house corners. A side wing is fastened to the house side wall with its own ledger, and each corner is mitred on a doubled hip from the house corner to the deck's outside corner.

A split level adds a lower section one step down across the front, joined by a full-width step. You can adjust it below.

House dimensions, finishes, doors & windows

Click a door or window in 3D to select it, then drag it along its wall. Use the controls below for exact dimensions and movement.

Finishes, roof pitch and ridge, cladding, door styles and openings are visual only. The house width and position decide where the ledger stops: any part of the deck's back edge beyond the house gets railing and a beam with posts, which changes the estimate. Heights are measured above grade.

Where the house sits

Set the floor height to check the step down from the door to the deck.

Ledger along the house: 16.0 ft.

House shape

Add a bump-out, an L-wing or an attached garage to the main house. Each block sits on one wall of the main house and has its own roof and floor height. An attached deck is notched around a bump-out: its face gets a ledger and its side walls are bolted to the outside joist. A bump-out always leaves at least 3 ft of deck in front of it.
