In every single case, the paver brand stamped on the surface was a name you'd recognize — Permacon, Unilock, Techo-Bloc, Oaks. The brand wasn't the failure point.
The failure point was almost always one of three things: insufficient base depth (most failures we see were built on 4-6 inches of granular A instead of the 12-16 inches of compacted clear stone our freeze-thaw cycles demand), wrong paver thickness for the application (60mm pedestrian pavers used where 80mm should have been spec'd, especially anywhere a maintenance vehicle or a stone-and-mortar coping crew has to drive across), or a low-LRV dark paver that absorbed enough July sun to thermally cycle itself apart over five winters.
If you want a pool deck that looks installed yesterday after a decade in service, get the base, the thickness, and the colour right — in that order. Slip Resistance: What R-11 Actually Means and Why You Need It
Slip resistance for paving is measured under the European DIN 51130 standard — a ramp test where someone walks across the wet surface at an increasing angle until they slip. Pavers are rated R-9 through R-13. Anything below R-11 has no business around a pool. R-11 is the minimum a Simcoe County pool deck should specify; R-12 is better if you have small kids or expect frequent wet running.
Most pavers in Permacon's, Unilock's, and Techo-Bloc's pool-deck-targeted product lines hit R-11 or R-12 by design — they're textured, shot-blasted, or cast with a micro-pattern specifically to break the surface tension when water sheets across them. Ask your contractor for the manufacturer spec sheet, look for the R-rating, and don't accept anything below R-11. Cool-Touch: Why a Dark Pool Deck Hurts (Literally)
A dark charcoal paver in direct July sun in Barrie hits surface temperatures around 60-65°C — hot enough to burn bare feet within seconds. A light-coloured paver in the same sun stays around 40-45°C, the difference between comfort and a child running to the grass.
The metric here is Light Reflectance Value (LRV) — how much visible light a surface reflects. Higher LRV means cooler surface. For pool decks we look for an LRV of 50 or higher. That puts you in the off-white, light grey, beige, and sandy ranges — and away from charcoal, deep blue, or near-black products that look stunning in a showroom but cook in our summer.
This is also why we don't recommend dark grout-style sanded joints around pools. The joints take up about 10-15% of the surface area and a dark joint sand drops the effective LRV of the whole deck. Use a colour-matched or lighter polymeric sand and the surface stays cool across its entire span.
If your aesthetic preference is moody and dark, we typically suggest using the dark paver for the surrounding patio and a lighter cool-touch paver for the pool deck itself — sharp visual transition, comfortable bare feet. Freeze-Thaw: The Ontario Climate Test Most Pavers Quietly Fail
Simcoe County goes through 60-85 freeze-thaw cycles per year — water seeping into the paver, freezing overnight, expanding, thawing, repeat. Pavers not rated for that abuse will scale, spall, or surface-crack within five winters. Pool decks fail faster than regular patios because they're already absorbing chlorinated splash water — which is harder on cementitious products than rainwater.
What to look for: every reputable paver manufacturer publishes a CSA A231.2 compliance statement or equivalent freeze-thaw test result. Permacon, Unilock, and Techo-Bloc all certify their main lines under this standard, which involves the paver surviving 50+ freeze-thaw cycles in lab conditions with under 1% mass loss. That's a real spec that maps onto real performance in our climate.
Avoid anything imported through a big-box store with no Canadian freeze-thaw certification, regardless of how cheap it is. We've seen $4/sq ft import pavers that looked identical to brand-name product, then failed catastrophically within three winters at a pool we re-built in Springwater in 2024.

The Base Matters More Than the Paver
We say this on every hardscape project we build, but pool decks especially: the most expensive premium paver installed on a 4-inch granular A base will fail before a budget paver installed on a 12-16 inch compacted clear stone base. The base is the single biggest determinant of whether your deck looks the same in ten years or starts sinking in the second winter.
What we build on every pool deck: 12 inches minimum, 16 inches in areas with poor-draining clay subgrade (most of the Bayfield Street corridor and the older Innisfil subdivisions). Compacted in 4-inch lifts with a plate compactor, using 3/4 inch clear crushed stone (NOT granular A — the difference is explained in our clear stone vs granular A guide). Geotextile fabric between the subgrade and the base to prevent soil migration upward over time.
That's the foundation that lets a paver perform to its rated lifespan. Without it, the best paver in the showroom is just a slow-motion failure.

A ground-level pool deck (under 60 cm above grade and not attached to a structure) usually does not require a building permit in Innisfil, Oro-Medonte, or the City of Barrie. However, if the deck is part of a new pool installation, the pool itself requires a permit and the deck is reviewed as part of that submission. Confirm with your local building department before excavation — bylaws vary by municipality and change.
How thick should pool deck pavers be?
80mm minimum for any pool deck. 60mm pavers are designed for pedestrian patio use, not the weight cycling of pool maintenance equipment, lounge chairs being dragged across the surface, or the saturation and drying cycles of a pool deck. The cost difference between 60mm and 80mm is small; the durability difference is significant.
Can an existing pool deck be re-finished or does it need full replacement?
It depends on the base. If the original base was properly built (12+ inches of compacted clear stone) and only the pavers are tired or stained, we can pull the pavers, refresh the joint sand, and re-lay or replace with new. If the base is failing — visible sinking, lifted edges, joint sand washing through to the subgrade — the base needs to be excavated and rebuilt, which means full deck replacement. What slope does a pool deck need for drainage?
Minimum 1% slope away from the pool, ideally 2%. That works out to 1-2 cm of fall per metre of deck length. Insufficient slope means standing water against the pool coping and on the deck surface — accelerates staining, freeze-thaw damage, and slip risk. We grade every pool deck to drain to a defined low point, usually toward a perimeter drain or a permeable joint zone.
Do I need to seal a pool deck paver?
Sealing is optional and depends on the paver line. Some manufacturers (notably Permacon's premium lines) come pre-sealed and don't need additional treatment. Others benefit from a penetrating sealer applied 30 days after installation to lock joint sand and resist chlorinated splash staining.
